At Supa Centa Moore Park, we love celebrating local talent. Our partnership with the Sydney Comets means we get to watch incredible athletes rise through the ranks—and none more so than Biwali Bayles & Davo Hickey.
This year, two of the Comets made history, becoming the first teammates to earn coveted spots in the NBA Summer League. Before heading back to training, one of these talented players, Biwali Bayles, shared his journey—offering inspiration for every young athlete dreaming big.
Early Days & Big Breaks
Q: What first lit your love of basketball?
A: I played lots of different sports, along with basketball, growing up. I enjoyed all sports and playing them with friends.
Q: How did the Sydney Comets help turn that passion into an international opportunity?
A: Comets was the first club that selected me when I was still new to basketball. I’ve been blessed to have great coaches since I was younger. They helped me learn the game, the fundamentals and helped build an environment that allowed me to thrive. If not for Sydney Comets, I definitely would not be where I am today.
Q: What did it feel like to make NBL1 history as the first two teammates to earn NBA Summer League spots?
A: I haven’t given much thought to the history side of things. I know it was such a dream come true for both of us, though. We used to watch Summer League and everything as kids and grew up wanting to achieve that. So to be able to turn that into a reality is just a blessing.
Roots & Motivation
Q: How does being a proud indigenous athlete inspire the way you play and train?
A: To me personally, I’m proud to be Aboriginal, and I represent my people to the end. But being an Aboriginal athlete doesn’t change the way I play or train. Of course, I know there’s not much Aboriginal hoopers on the national stage, so I hope I can inspire the younger boys, but for me, Aboriginal or not, I love this game, and my work rate stays the same.
Q: Who in your family or community gave you the biggest push to chase your dream?
A: 100% my mum. She encouraged me to play basketball when I still wanted to play footy. If it weren’t for my mum, I most likely would not be playing basketball.
Q: What advice would you give to young players across Australia?
A: Advice I would give is that you have to stay consistent in your work. You have to really love the game if this is what you want to do for a living. A lot of people only see the benefits of basketball and only want that. You have to be resilient and consistent.
Game-Day Highlights
Q: Favourite music before a game to get amped?
A: I listen to hip-hop/rap.
Q: If you could have any superpower on the court—speed, height, or endless energy—which would you pick?
A: I have all that except the height, so probably that.
Q: Dream basketball shoe collab?
A: I need my own Nike signature Basketball shoe
Q: One word to describe this season?
A: Community!
